I rode my bike down to the Table Rock Area a few days ago and travelled south towards the Niagara Parks Floral Showhouse. To get there I had to cross a newly beautifully reconstructed bridge. At one time water from the Niagara River flowed under this bridge to supply water power for the now abandoned Canadian Niagara Power plant.
 
It reminded me that prior to 1904, when this plant was built, there was an island known as Cedar Island. It was located in the Niagara River above the falls opposite the new plant. The island was connected to the mainland by a bridge. On the island was an observation tower known as Street’s Pagoda. During the construction of this plant the channel between the mainland and the island was filled in.

Prior to 1904 the area where the current bridge is found was part of the Niagara River.
