What's the origin of 'Niagara'?
It is believed Niagara is a derivative of the Iroquoian word ,”Onguiaahra” which was anglicized by missionaries.
The name appears on maps as early as 1641.The generally accepted meaning is,”The Strait”.Some believe the name was derived from the narrow waterway connecting Lakes Erie and Ontario.Although technically this waterway is really a strait it is referred to today as the Niagara River.
