The Skylon Tower in Niagara Falls turns 50 on Oct. 6th of this month. Construction of the $7 million dollar tower began in May of 1964 and at the time of it’s opening in October of 1965; it was the tallest (156 metres, 520 feet) reinforced concrete structure in the world. As a young 21 year old who had just began working in the tourist industry I remember clearly the tower opening with great fanfare. N.Y. Governor Nelson Rockefeller and Ontario Premier John Robarts were on hand to open the magnificent tower which consisted of a large indoor convention space at the base of the tower, a 360 degree Revolving Restaurant at the top of the tower, with another stationary restaurant and an indoor/outdoor observation deck at the peak that affords a superb view of the falls and surrounding area. Three outdoor, “yellow bug” elevators still take visitors to the top.

The Skylon Tower continues to be one of Niagara Falls icons and to play host to celebrities, heads of state and royalty.
